Antica Terra vineyard
If you like stories of dreamers who realize their dreams and more…well, read on.tBoW interviewed four terrific winemakers in early Summer 2011: Doug Margerum, Maggie Harrison, Jessica Mozeico and the Semler clan. Each is a bona fide innovator who pursued a dream until it became a reality. The ready-for-prime-time versions are in Elegant Living Magazine online. We present these winemakers here for those of you who have abandoned or never got to know the print medium. (more…)

San Francisco Jazz Collective at the Bowl
Another year another day eating delectables from Joan’s On Third, drinking excellent wines (Margerum Klickitat Pinot Gris, 7 Hearts Pinot Noir and Rousanne, Huet Sparkling Vouvray and a perfect Provencal Ros√©) and listening to a superb lineup of contemporary and classic jazz musicians. Just like the world of wine…the world of this music festival in the Hollywood Bowl has changed for the better.

they have a wine
Poker players like to say “I’d rather be lucky than good.” Is this just another way of saying you do something often enough you’re bound to fall into something good sometime? Vince Neil and his band were very very lucky. They made superb RnR and at some point Vince made a wine. We have not tasted it. But we do have a motley assortment of other wine odds and ends. [ed. Dude that would have been cool tasting the Cr√ºe wine. I thought you knew people.] (more…)

Rip City satire
Who does not love a short trip that combines excellent food with outstanding drink, a cool town with cooler venues, and inherently beautiful sights? We have plenty of choices in easy reach of LA. San Francisco is a one hour flight with plenty of superb restaurant choices matched with equally interesting wine lists. The City is just a cool place to drive around with vistas from the Pacific Ocean to the skyscrapers and Oaktown across the Bay. One downside: the City is expensive. An overnight drive to Santa Barbara is another great diversion, if also pricey, with fewer dining choices and a conveniently located wine country.
Portland has all the charms of Baghdad by the Bay and the California Riviera with room to spare PLUS everything is quite affordable. Here are the highlights from a recent getaway to Rip City. (more…)

wine angel
U20s abound. We are proud to point out thebestofwines saw the trophy-wine-bubble bursting urrlllyy on. Way ahead of the trend…a trend not set as deep, perhaps, as current real estate prices. When will our multi-million dollar homes and those fat home equity credit lines come back? Only when $350 Napa Cabernets become hard to acquire. Right now they are simply hard to find. Try China [ed. "wine angels" are supposedly the hot ticket in Beijing and Shanghai]. In the meantime the thoughtful oenophile can sample from a slew of retailers’ bargain bins PLUS the gemstone picks by some very savvy online/email vendors. Here are three we like [ed. with thanks to alert tBoW team taster Krisses!] (more…)
