Papa Fred’s back yard was the perfect Southern California setting for a relatively spontaneous wine tasting with snacks and hounds and folks who really enjoy wines bearing relatively obscure labels. We also a couple of special bottles to taste. A late Summer-early Fall heat wave put us on the patio. We pulled a bunch of corks and paid more attention to the dogs than the football game. But we paid the most attention to the wines. Photos courtesy of Kris-A. Comments from Kris-B. Welcome to new tBoW team taster K2. (more…)

Riesling Importer Royalty
Summer is winding down. Sun is going down earlier. Evenings are chilling down and college football has started. Things are pretty much slipping into place for the Fall and Holiday season. Not so fast. Before we can put on the slippers and robe and dive into the recliner here came a quiet surprise. Local wine retailer Woodland Hills Wine Company recently hosted what looked to be an incredible tasting of Riesling wines. WHWCo is known for hosting all star importers such as Louis/Dressner and Becky Wasserman. Call this crew the Riesling all stars. tBoW dashed over after the UCLA Rose Bowl disaster [ed. Neuheisel? Would have to be a Nahe vineyard], plunked down the $29 tasting fee for the chance to finally meet Bill Mayer whose import company is the Age of Riesling. Glad we did. (more…)

A stellar lineup boasting the best wines from three European regions left the rail-birds speechless and begging for more. Even the “claimers” at the front of the card showed spunk and class. The great grapes Nebbiolo, Pinot Noir and Tempranillo – each from a star stable – were all represented on this evening card. (more…)

a taste of Spain
Mr. and Mrs. tBoW have been touring Spain for the past couple weeks. As tBoW prepares the reports we offer a welltimed mop up from recent tastings. The best wine out of Malibu gets challenged with seafood stir fry, a very good Carneros Bordeaux blend, and an old Super Second Bordeaux. And even more! (more…)

IGTY the Happy Burg farmer
Hi Ho!! Hi Ho!! We love Burgundy especially when we come across a goodun. And we really love Rieslings from the Mosel. It is far easier to encounter a terrific Mosel Riesling than something similarly transcendent from Burgundy. Yet, we chase Burgundies like they were commonplace items and neglect the low hanging Mosels that can be found in any decent wine shop around town. Go figger. IGTY says Burgundy is all about the farmer. These guys have dirty fingernails and wear overalls. Unlike the Bordelais who carry man purses and take meetings over lunch. Burg farmers take lunch under a tree. Spring cleaning resolution…pray for more luck with Burgundies [ed. mitigate the risk and just buy Anne Gros?] and drink more Mosel wines, especially like these two guzzle-able Kabinetts! (more…)
