Hotel Street action ca. 1960s
Waikiki is Bourbon Street meets the Vegas Strip. People come to the Hawaiian islands and stay a week or longer in Waikiki. Same crew that buys all their wine from BevMO. Then there are other people who fly right past Oahu on their way to Maui, Kauai or the Big Island and stay in a destination resort. They include those who only buy wines rated 90 points or higher. There is more to wine and more to Oahu [ed. and more to the outer islands; g'head and be obnoxious].

new wine shop owner in Princeville
After 5 days of rain and grey skies on the north shore of Kauai – and buying wine in the new Princeville Wine Market – we were ready to wash Hanalei right out of our hair. Fortunately, we had set aside three nights and three and a half days in Honolulu because we like the city and the island. It is much more cosmo than Dancing with the Stars. (more…)

map for getting lost in the Pyrenees
Getting lost in wine country is a great way to tour. The next best thing might be getting lost when tasting wines. In fact, this is a tBoW theme loved by fellow tasters including the Krisses, Dotoré, Largnés and the Field Mouse. Is this what happens when one spends too much time on TV shows like
Ancient Aliens and
Oddities [ed. muted of course]? When we had an opportunity to pull a few corks with the creator of the Mouse rating scheme naturally we turned to the odd wines in our cellars and sale bins. Each wine was unknown to one or both of us.
Herkaleez! Herkaleez! Each unusual wine was a winner.

With our lives governed by precious petrol we had little choice but to turn to wine as an alternative fuel source over Labor Day. The Large provided the first tasting session on a perfectly sunny SoCal day. After checking out the SW swell at Salt Creek we retired for a serious and amusing tasting dubbed Le Ruse Rouge de Mooj. The crew assembled for the avalanche of U20 wines laced with commentary heavy in fake Frénch acceñts. Let’s get to it. Many of the wines are still available.
Chris primed the tasters with a nice selection of Rosés that showcased the range of varietals and regions making up this prototypical summer beverage. (more…)

Today: Lopez tasting room
We love to find the U20 wines that are today’s hot ticket. Let me reach around here for a moment and pat myself on the back. Ah. That’s good. HOWEVER…good as those U20 wines are with their high value to quality ratio, it is not often they will make a list of Truly Superb wines. And what are those? And why are they? (more…)

NBC has turned the Olympics into Facebook and Twitter. We get the medal news all day long then we watch and listen in the dinner hour to the announcers describe what we already know took place. Like there is some suspense to it. Give me a brown bag wine tasting! Infinitely more guessing and even when you “lose” you win. And talk about team spirit as the tBoW team tasters work together to mis-ID the wines and the secrets they hold…such as where they are from and what is the varietal base. Bonus: Botox Costas is nowhere to be seen. Jeez. I hope that didn’t come off too bitchy! Here are the wines… (more…)
