Wine Texting ‘n Tasting: Digital Kismet

baby_texting_omg_I_just_gotWine offers hit tBoW’s cellphone like a Spring cloudburst. The deluge of text messages got more strange with each entry. This was actually a good thing as the best tastings are often born of spontaneity and hasty planning, last minute conversations, a profound absence of planning. Add digital communiques. Stir the right blend of fluids and foods, friends of both genders and multi-generational, into a very satisfying brew.

Think of the following texts as the cosmic dust from which a universe of epicurian hip hop spontaneous good times emerge.

Sandy beach?

Ten years old?

Impending doom???

The first offer of what to bring is never the best offer. However, it must grab one’s attention. Commerical encroachment on a failing commercial enterprise stirs the reolutionary zeal. Bring it!

A strange Loire red wine you say.

Strenj is good…especially in wine.

[ed. I think you mean with not in wine. Strenj is never good in wine. Correct?]

tBoW is sold. Must see what is this strenj wine all about.

Hold the presses!

That’s a lot of information.

Did he text Orange Rieslings that could explode?

Interesting… but no.

A third voice entered the text loop at the manic apogee.

“I love a blind Pinot.

And a deaf Nebbiolo.

Not too crazy about a lame Cabernet.”

This wine stayed home.

How were the wines?

billiot-champWEBThe H. Billiot Reserve Brut Reserve Grand Cru Champagne $48 12% was fresh and refreshing. Has a severe hand that is in harmony with the seductive. The perfect entry to a long mid Spring evening.

gold-medal-muscadet05WEBThere were two white wines from the same producer, different vintages: the 2011 and 2005 Luneau-Papin 2011 Muscadet “Vielles Vigne” $15 and $33, respectively. The tBoW palate for Muscadet will not be constrained. Muscadet is a lively bantamweight wine that packs some wallop. It won’t knock you out but it will let you know you are in the ring with something formidable. A “perfect” wine for almost any occasion? Note the gold medal. Cue French horns.

The endangered Portuguese and the strange Loire red wines pleased more sophisticated palates than those of tBoW and the hungry sycophants, young’uns and geezers. For the harshly biased taster, however, the red wines showed an ashen nose with nuances of ciggy butts and a hint of unfiltered Pall Malls. Not enough fruit, too much sand. However, the wines did fully deliver on the exotic and unusual scale. We love that.

All in all a completely disruptive evening with wonderfully engaging wines.

Now here is some very good advice.

Holy Holidays Burg Man. tBoW Blog Day is Christmas!

Venice art tree

Talk about your freaky coincidences. Christmas week in LA is in the 80s. If I told you how often this is the case you would leave Connecticut and move back here. Wait. You may already know that. Looks like stogies on the patio and another round of goff. Merry Christmas to everyone especially those we know who retired this year. Hope everyone drinks better wines more often. (more…)

Dinner! Cameras!! Action!!! Blogging Wild Yellow Tail on the Web

The Internet is a tool for having fun with anything you like. Well, we like food and wine so when REL invited us to her blog dinner we said we’ll bring the wine. We arrive at REL’s apartment building. She and Sean Rice have begun shooting this evening’s dinner that will be featured on Sean’s food blog Meat Me. REL has her own food blog Things I Make in my Kitchen. Obviously, the two have been trading bits, bytes and quite a few megapixels. We are the first of four guests. Sofie and Paul will arrive shortly. I open the first wine. (more…)

BEST $10 Muscadet from Garagiste and BEST Pinot Noir from the Bu

Land of Muscadet

Touting a Garagiste – aka “G.” – purchase is always dicey. Like nostalgia, praising a great G. buy only works in retrospect. Rimmerman’s selections almost always sell out so there is no going back and buying in. You have to be there when it all goes down. There are other pitfalls when mainlining G. which Dotoré will insist we mention [ed. and we have in an earlier G. post] such as Rimmerman’s twist on the “availability principle,” as in “it’s not a question of price but availability.” With G. you have to strike early and decisively since it is apparent G. buys “on the come.” When you check your warehouse chart you will find many “pre-arrival” notes next to the wine for which you so willingly even anxiously..yes thrillingly!!…pulled the trigger! BEST Fourth of July Parties…Wine, Wimmen, Snoozing in the Sun

Three gloriously HOT days. Any wine sipping foo gonna hit the party party party circuit. NowhatImsayin? We did. IGTY had the best babes and the most relaxed scene. But when it came to wine the Krisses ruled the roost at Papa Fred’s Shack. The wines ranged from Northern Italy’s Alto Adige (Lagrein) to two Paso Robles’ Wild Horse whites to several Ros√©s that created a stir. The wine tasters also ranged widely. Necromancer, prodigy, novotiate, tenderfoot, shellback, bashful and laconic. Toss in a garrulous minx and there is the perfect 4th of July bash. Read what they had to say about the wines that washed across their wanting palates. (more…)
